Eat So They Can Newsletter

ESTC

Hi ,

Eat So They Can is a matter of weeks away! Here at the ESTC office, we’ve been flat out organising this year’s ESTC weekend, but it’s all coming along nicely! Hopefully your party packs have arrived, and your event planning is all coming together. It’s fantastic to see some of the events you all have planned, and to see some donations rolling in already.

We thought that as ESTC is only a few weeks away, this newsletter would be a great opportunity to give one last overview of everything you might need to know in order to host a successful event. We realise that in the midst of all the information about ESTC (we try not to bombard you with too much, we promise!), it might all become a bit difficult to keep track of, but fear not, everything you need to know is right here!

Thanks again for signing up to host an event, and good luck with all your party planning! If you haven’t signed up, it’s not too late. You can sign up at www.eatsotheycan.org, where you will also find all kinds of resources for planning and promoting your event. Also, don’t forget to keep an eye on our blog, facebook page, and twitter for all your last-minute ESTC updates!

Remember – together, we will save lives, one meal at a time.

With gratitude,

Eliza Raymond
Executive Director

Step by Step Guide

So you've signed-up to host an Eat So They Can event but you're not quite sure what happens next? Don't panic! Here is a step-by-step guide of what you need to do over the next few weeks:

Choose your venue: This is the first step you should take as it will affect everything else. Your venue can be your home, a community hall, a park, a beach, a church hall, a restaurant, a cinema or anything else you can think of!

Decide on the date and time: Although the official weekend is October 15-16, remember that you are also welcome to host your event later in the year. Our only request is that you submit donations by December 31.

Start promoting your event:You can do this by updating your personalised webpage and sending this around as an invitation to your event. If it's a public event you might also want to put up posters and ask your friends to help you spread the word.

Think about how you want to raise money at your event: You can raise money in many different ways depending on the type of event you're organizing. Some examples include: charging a ticket price, a suggested entry donation, a collection box which you pass around after showing the DVD, a raffle, an auction or items for sale at your event.

Think about what you want to offer your guests:If you're planning on charging an entry price you will need to think about what you can offer your guests. Will you provide free food, drinks or have a raffle? Remember it's completely up to you so do what you feel comfortable with and make sure it's appropriate for your venue.

Host your event! Good luck and remember to have fun! You worked hard so give yourself a pat on the back and enjoy it!

Submit your donations to the GVN Foundation: You can do this either online through your personalised webpage or by writing a check/cheque made out to the GVN Foundation. If you write a check make sure you put ESTC and your name in the memo and post it to: PO Box 602, Bellefontaine, OH 43311, USA. New Zealand donors should make cheques out to GVN Charitable Trust, and send them to Global Volunteer Network, PO Box 30-968,Lower Hutt, New Zealand

Event Ideas

We've heard about some amazing event ideas over the past few weeks and I want to take this opportunity to share a few of them with you. Remember that your event can be anything you want it to be and that no event is too small or too big! Here are some ideas you may want to think about:

  • Eat So They Can cocktail night: A cocktail night is relatively easy to organize and is always popular! One host is even creating a special 'ESTC' cocktail.
  • Themed evening: To spice up the evening a bit, why not have a theme? At GVN we'll be having an 'international' theme and we're hoping that people will wear typical clothes from their home countries!
  • Pot luck dinner: If cooking for all your guests seems like too much of a challenge or you can't afford it, a pot luck dinner is a great option! Ask everyone to bring a plate and then rather than charging a ticket price you can ask for donations after showing the DVD or you can hold a raffle.
  • Live music/dancing: Why not talk to some local groups and see if you can get them to perform some live music/dancing at your event? Or if you have a talented bunch of friends, you might want to organize a Talent Show!
  • Auction/raffle: A great way to bring a bit of excitement to the evening and raise some extra dollars is to ask local companies to donate items which you can auction or raffle at your event. Just let us know if you'd like a template letter which you can use to approach potential companies.

If you any other ideas you would like to share with us, feel free! It's never too late to spread the word!

Feature cause - Orphaned and Vulnerable Children

Our Orphaned and Vulnerable Children cause was established as important part of helping to break the cycle of poverty. By assisting such a vulnerable sector of society, we aim to give children the opportunities to allow them to create a brighter future for themselves and their family.

Eat So They Can believes in good education, health and nutrition for children. We support a number of projects around the world such as schools, orphanages and an IDP camp where our assistance directly benefits children.

Every year, we are able to provide orphanages with funds to go towards the general running costs of the centre. Orphanages are not always happy and supportive places for children to be, but we strive to make sure our partner orphanages are able to provide the best environment for the children who live there.

In addition to this, we support a few breakfast and lunch programs in Africa and South America.

We’re also interested in sustainable change for children. In 2010, a goat farm was established at a school in Uganda. This means the school have a new source of income to support themselves from. A higher income means more benefits for the children enrolled there. We hope this will improve the school experience for the kids who attend this school.

If you would like to know more about this cause, why not check out the Orhpaned and Vulnerable children section of our 2011 ESTC DVD, which can be found by clicking here.

Feature cause - Women's Empowerment

The basis of this cause is to enable women to have a brighter future for themselves and their families by providing assistance in practical ways. This is something we feel really passionate about because according to UNICEF, women perform 66 percent of the world’s work but only earn 10 percent of the income. Furthermore the UN Capital Development Fund has found that women are more likely than men to spend their profits on household and family needs. Assisting women therefore generates a multiplier effect that has a positive impact on their whole family and community. The funds raised for this cause go towards supporting grassroots community projects that are empowering women through training and education.

An example of one of the projects we are supporting is Huchuy Yachaq in Peru. Huchuy Yachaq is a community center located in the Andes region of Peru, near Cusco.According to the World Health Organisation, 69 percent of women in Cusco have suffered violence; this is a region where poverty continues to undermine health, education and development. The community center aims to improve the lives of everyone living in the community through a library and tutoring service for the kids, and through projects aimed to empower women and reduce domestic violence.

You can find out more by watching the Women’s Empowerment section of our 2011 ESTC DVD, which can be found here.

Feature cause - Greatest Need

Funds raised for the Greatest Need cause go where they are needed most and are used to financially support partners and projects which are lacking in resources and funds to operate. By supporting this cause you are effectively also supporting our Women’s Empowerment and Orphaned and Vulnerable Children causes as all of our work focuses on helping these two groups. Funds are used to support both immediate needs and sustainability projects at schools, orphanages, community centres and camps in Asia, Africa, and South America. You will also be providing long-term support through supporting GVN Foundation research projects.

A reserve fund is also created from these funds which allows GVN Foundation to respond immediately should there be any emergencies in the near future.

For more on our Greatest Need cause, check out this clip we prepared for this year’s ESTC DVD.

Good Luck!

Last but most certainly not least, good luck! All the best for hosting your events, we hope they go smoothly. We don’t mean to sound like a broken record, but once again we just want to thank everyone who will be hosting an event this year. Thanks so much!
